Jewelry: 1910 - 1939 Art Deco. Vintage MCM Murano Glass Clown Aventurine Lattimo Abstract Surrealist. Here we have an unbelieveably unique and vintage Murano Glass Clown. This clown has a beatuiful bright green and clear body, accentuated with magenta glass buttons, face with gold-speckled Aventurine styling. Hands and Nose appear to possibly be gold-leaf blown.
Bright, soft yellow hair tone, surrounded by a creamy Lattimo head scarf? Very cool piece that can fit itself into a variety of tastes. This piece appeals not only to traditional fans of Murano Glass, but has a great aesthetic that should capture the eye of lovers of oddities and surrealism. "Murano Glass" refers to glass crafted on the island of Murano, near Venice, Italy. The tradition started in 1291 when glassmakers were moved there to reduce fire hazards in Venice's wooden buildings. Murano was already a busy trading hub, and soon its artisans gained fame for their exceptional glass design skills, establishing a centuries-long monopoly on glass production. The industry experienced significant growth in the 1950s and 60s, exporting vast quantities of glassware and catering to the tourist market. Today, Murano remains a center of active glass production, continuing its legacy of artistry and craftsmanship. It has been very difficult to narrow down exactly who made this unique piece.
Based on the label, we were able to deduce that this piece likely originates from the 1950's, but probably no later than the 60's. The label appears to be generic. Whilst there aren't many available examples of it, we found it on pieces from Fratelli & Toso, as well as Cristallo Venezia CCC.Either way, "rare" doesn't do this piece justice, as it is truly one-of-a-kind. Dimensions: 6.5"L x 2.75" W x 9 H Condition. Clown is in very good condition, but appears to have a small piece that chipped off on the very top of the head.
It almost looks like a manufacturing mark, but its just a bit too jagged for me to say that confidently. I generally don't notice it from normal viewing position. Other then that, there's no major scratches or cracks I could detect. As typical of Murano glass, it has natural imperfections and characteristics that are expected with handmade pieces and should not be confused with post-production mishaps.
